Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) Job

The Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) supports the school nurse in providing health-related services to students and maintaining a safe and healthy school environment. The CNA assists students with medical needs, first aid, and personal care, ensuring every child has the opportunity to learn and thrive in a caring, supportive atmosphere.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
  • Assists the school nurse in providing basic health services and first aid to students.
  • Supports students with chronic or acute medical needs in accordance with Individualized Health Plans (IHPs), Individualized Education Plans (IEPs), or Emergency Action Plans (EAPs).
  • Administers medications and/or treatments as authorized and directed by the school nurse.
  • Provides personal care for students with disabilities, including assistance with feeding, toileting, mobility, and hygiene.
  • Records and maintains accurate documentation of student health visits, medication logs, and communications per district policy and confidentiality laws (FERPA, HIPAA).
  • Ensures sanitary practices are followed at all times.
  • Observes and reports promptly to the school nurse any changes in a student's condition, appearance, or behavior.
  • Assists with health screenings (vision, hearing, scoliosis, etc.) as needed.
  • Promotes student wellness through health education, preventive care, and safety awareness.
  • Serves as a caring, professional representative of the school system's health services team.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills with children and adults.
  • Provides a compassionate, patient-centered approach to student care.
  • Follows medical and administrative directions accurately.
  • Maintains confidentiality and adheres to health privacy laws.
  • Responds calmly and effectively in emergency situations.

Qualification Requirements:
Education & Experience:
  • High school diploma or equivalent required.
  • Current Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) license in the State of Alabama.
  • Experience in school health, pediatrics, or child care preferred.
  • Current CPR and First Aid certification preferred.
  • Must pass background check and meet all school system employment requirements.
Language Skills:
  • Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals. Ability to write routing reports and correspondence.
Mathematical Skills:
  • Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals. Ability to compute rate, ratio, and percent.
Reasoning Ability:
  • Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out detailed but uninvolved written or oral instructions. Ability to deal with problems involving a few concrete variables in standardized situations.
Physical Demands:
  • While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to sit and talk or hear. The employee frequently is required to use hands to finger, handle, or feel objects, tools, or controls. The employee is occasionally required to stand, walk, and climb stairs.
  • The employee must frequently lift and/or move up to 50 pounds. The employee must occasionally lift, push, pull, and/or move up to 50 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.
Work Environment:
  • The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.
  • Exposure to bodily fluids or communicable conditions may be evident (protective equipment provided).
