Position Information Position Title: Standardized Patient (SP) Position Control Number: S02387 Type of Position: Staff Position Status: Part-time Campus: WesternU Pomona, CA Department: 1430 - Standardized Patients – COMP Job Summary The major responsibility is to apply acting, communication, and feedback skills as dictated by case materials. Standardized Patients (SPs) perform for learners from various colleges on the WesternU Pomona campus and outside clients as needed. Duties include realistic portrayal of a patient or client, simulating physical signs and symptoms, responding to learner cues, and providing accurate assessments verbally and/or through documentation. SPs may participate in non-invasive physical examinations as part of the learning experience and must maintain accuracy and standardization across sessions and with fellow SPs. The SP reports to the Director and Assistant Director of the Office of Medical Simulation. For individual learning events, SPs will be scheduled, trained, and supervised by the Standardized Patient Educator leading the event. Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Must be highly dependable and punctual. Demonstrate flexibility, adaptability, and reliability with scheduling, assignments, and performances; adapt to varying skill sets depending on the college, overseeing faculty, and learner level. Strong written and spoken communication; able to understand and follow instructions; maintain professional interactions with learners, faculty, supervisors, and peers. Accept ongoing feedback from facilitators and incorporate it into case simulations; provide constructive feedback to learners and colleagues. Strong reading and writing skills to absorb case training and exam procedural information and complete assessments accurately and consistently. Excellent ability to recall learned performance and adjust to feedback from Coaches and Standardized Patient Educators. Ability to simulate a case scenario accurately, reliably, and professionally; comfortable participating in repeated physical examination maneuvers, including history, affect/behavior, and physical findings. Willingness to be recorded during simulations; comfortable wearing a hospital gown with undergarments as part of certain examinations; readiness to be recorded on video or observation windows. Strong attention to detail. Required Qualifications Experience with software programs and computer skills required. Preferred Qualifications Applicants with acting or education experience are encouraged to apply, though not obligatory. Experience as a Standardized Patient is preferred. Key Responsibilities Perform for learners from multiple colleges on the WesternU Pomona campus (e.g., COMP, Pharmacy, Veterinary Medicine, Physical Therapy, Dentistry) and outside clients as needed; portray a patient or client and respond to learner cues as dictated by case materials; provide assessments verbally and/or through documentation. Participate in non-invasive physical examinations with learners; maintain accuracy and standardization across sessions. Accurately and consistently complete assessments and provide constructive feedback to learners and colleagues. Perform other duties as assigned. Salary: Pay scale: Minimum $17.00 – Maximum $25.00 per hour. Physical Demands As part of the role, the SP may be required to participate in simulated physical examinations, including hearing/dealing with patient care activities. Physical demands include standing, walking, sitting, lifting up to 10 pounds regularly and up to 25 pounds occasionally, and other standard vision and mobility requirements. The role may involve exposing areas of the body during examinations and being comfortable with gown-based examinations and being recorded. Work Environment Work typically occurs in a lab or lecture hall setting with a range of noise levels depending on activity.
