The Montgomery County Public Defender's Office is excited to announce applications are now open for our Summer 2026 Legal Internship Program. This program offers a unique and invaluable opportunity for law students passionate about public service and criminal defense. Our interns work closely with seasoned attorneys, gaining hands-on experience and an in-depth understanding of the criminal justice system.
As a legal intern, you will actively contribute to our mission of representing individuals-both adults and juveniles-facing criminal charges across Montgomery County. Additionally, our office's Child Advocacy Unit provides legal interns the chance to assist in representing children in foster care, ensuring their voices are heard and their rights protected. ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIESImmersive Learning: Interns will participate in an in-depth training program to learn about the criminal justice process, how to interview clients, and how to handle preliminary hearings and motions hearings. Interns will be involved in real casework, from client interviews to legal research, motion drafting, court observations, in-court litigation offering a front-row seat to the workings of the criminal justice process.
Certified Legal Intern Experience: Interns who are eligible to serve as certified legal interns will conduct preliminary hearings, preliminary arraignments, motions hearings, and handle guilty pleas under the tutelage of experienced lawyers. Mentorship: Work directly with experienced public defenders, receiving feedback and guidance designed to sharpen your legal skills and broaden your professional development. Diverse Case Exposure: From felony trials to juvenile advocacy, you'll observe and assist in meaningful legal work that impacts our community. Off Site Visits: Our interns will visit and tour correctional facilities, juvenile placements, and the state hospital to learn more about the innerworkings of these facilities and their intersection with the work of the Public Defender. QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTSCommitment: Interns are expected to devote 40 hours per week over a 10-week period, starting June 1, 2026.
Academic Credit: While this is an unpaid internship, we will assist students in obtaining academic credit or exploring work-study options through their law schools or external funding sources. Education and Credentials * Must have completed at least two semesters of law school from an ABA accredited law school. PHYSICAL DEMANDS* Mixed work environment: office, court, correctional facilities.
* Prolonged sitting, standing, walking in an office and court environment.
* Significant and repeated use of a keyboard.
