Job Description

Overview Principal Research Scientist, Sequencing Applications at Roche. This is a hands-on, lab-based role to build the application ecosystem for the Axelios Sequencing platform and translate the Sequencing by Expansion (SBX) technology into real-world tools. This position is on-site in Pleasanton, CA. Responsibilities Join a tight-knit local team of scientists, role-model leadership, mentor junior scientists, and champion scientific rigor and innovation. Collaborate with commercial partners, external researchers, and internal bioinformatics colleagues to implement and analyze novel workflows; translate complex data into meaningful interpretations for internal and external stakeholders. Invent, prototype, and characterize sequencing workflows by designing and executing rigorous experiments; troubleshoot assays, resolve technical issues, and interpret data using broad molecular biology knowledge. Support the adoption of new Axelios applications by creating technical content (application notes, publications) and presenting data at scientific conferences. Identify and champion new technological opportunities, contributing to the strategic direction of the R&D organization. Job location: Pleasanton, CA on-site. Qualifications Required Qualifications PhD with 3+ years of relevant industry experience, OR Master’s with 6+ years, OR Bachelor’s with 8+ years. Deep understanding of the molecular biology of sample preparation for NGS; experience designing and optimizing multiple distinct NGS workflows. Experience beyond standard library preparation from DNA or RNA, such as single-cell sequencing, protein detection by sequencing, or spatial sequencing. Proficiency in interpreting standard bioinformatics pipeline outputs and sequencing metrics for genomic analysis. Excellent interpersonal and communication skills; ability to collaborate effectively within and across teams. Excellent organizational skills; ability to evaluate, prioritize, and manage multiple changing projects and priorities; timely, accurate, and thorough work. Preferred Experience with a range of NGS instruments (e.g., Illumina, PacBio, Oxford). Experience with automating sequencing workflows on systems like Hamilton or Tecan. Strong record of innovation with publications and patents. Experience with Design of Experiments (DOE) and statistical process control (SPC). Proficiency in technical writing. Relocation benefits are not available for this posting. The expected salary range for this position based on the California location is $108,400 - $201,200. Actual pay will be determined based on experience, qualifications, geographic location, and other job-related factors permitted by law. A discretionary annual bonus may be available based on individual and company performance. This position also qualifies for benefits described in the linked materials.
