Idaho National Laboratory is hiring a Nuclear Engineer to work in the Materials and Fuels Complex Reactor Engineering Department. You will contribute analyses to support the design and acceptance of new advanced reactors, assist in startup physics testing, and support existing reactors. INL is lead national laboratory for DOE-NE, providing nuclear research, development, and demonstration capabilities. The Materials & Fuels Complex hosts a unique combination of personnel, facilities, and infrastructure to conduct nuclear fuel R&D. Responsibilities Supports, coordinates and performs confirmatory calculations and startup planning in the area of technical expertise (reactor physics, thermal hydraulics, thermo-mechanical analysis) to support development of facility and reactor specific safety basis supporting analyses. Plan, schedule and track reactor analyses and planning for startup testing and verification activities to validate analytical work and ensure safety. Provide support to project and planning activities related to new reactor design and acceptance, communicating with design and nuclear safety organizations, working with external reactor designers, DOE, and contributing organizations. Use design methodologies, technologies and processes best practice to develop and define a design and to validate that the design meets defined requirements. Document the design (controlled and approved models, drawings, specifications, design descriptions) to establish conformance with design requirements and applicable codes and standards. Establish testing, inspection and quality requirements to ensure technical features important to design functions are maintained. Oversee or otherwise ensure fabrication, construction, assembly and procurement are done in accordance with the design. Defend analytical methods and results in management and independent reviews. Perform analysis and design tasks supporting project/program interactions with sponsors, operations, and engineering organizations. Develop physics-based mathematical models of neutronics, thermal, mechanical, chemical, and electrical systems to support and verify design, and continually improve models and analysis methods. Prepare reports and peer‑reviewed publications. Represent programs, the Laboratory, and the Division/Department through programmatic and technical presentations to the public, sponsors and peers at conferences and symposia. Other duties as assigned. Minimum Requirements Level 4: Bachelor’s degree in an engineering discipline and 9 years’ experience, or Master’s degree and 6 years’ experience, or PhD and 6 years’ experience. Level 5: Bachelor’s degree and 14 years of experience; Master’s and 8 years; PhD and 6 years. Additional Requirements Must be a US Citizen and have the ability and willingness to obtain and maintain a DOE “Q” clearance. Preferred Experience Advanced degree in Nuclear Engineering or related field from an ABET‑accredited institution. Experience in nuclear fuels and materials, reactor physics, thermal hydraulics, core design, analysis tools/ methods, and/or related technical areas. Experience performing calculations and analyses in support of safety analysis documentation to be submitted to a regulator. Job Information Pay range: Level 4 ($111,888–$229,284), Level 5 ($134,124–$275,136). TDP: Subject to pre‑employment drug screen and periodic drug testing. Multi‑Level: Placement at appropriate level based on experience and skills. Physical Requirements Frequent standing, walking, sitting, stooping, kneeling, bending. Requires hand/finger dexterity for typing, handling materials, manipulating tools. May need to lift up to 25 lbs. Requires adequate vision and hearing.
