Daystar Academy, an IB continuum school in the city of Chicago, serves students in primary, middle school and high school. We are looking for a highly qualified, justice-minded Music Coordinator for the 2025-2026 school year.
Job Type: Part Time On Site Position
Reports to: Director of Lower and Middle School
Required: Professional experience in music performance/education)
Demonstrated proficiency in vocal and/or instrumental instruction
Experience teaching music to children and/or adolescents
Basic piano/keyboard proficiency for accompanying and instruction
Familiarity with general music curriculum and age-appropriate pedagogy
Preferred: Bachelors Degree in music or a related field
Work Days/Hours: Monday-Friday, 15 hours per week
Job Summary: All Staff Responsibilities: - Provide a safe school environment, indoors and out, per directives regarding building operations (keys, fobs, alarm codes), the Daystar Distinctives and Responsive Classroom practice
- Fulfill essential job functions based on ones specific job description; and during times of school drills or emergencies, assist others as able.
- Be on time, appropriately dressed and ready for work at assigned days/times.
- Model positive and respectful interactions with students, and all members of the Daystar community at all times.
- Be an excellent ambassador of Daystar Academy at all times.
- Respect all school procedures and chain of command.
- Adhere to the requirements outlined in the Staff Handbook.
Music Teacher Responsibilities - Ensure the safety and well-being of all students at all times.
- Promptly communicate to the Lead Teacher any observations or concerns regarding students academic progress, social interactions, or behavior.
- Refer all parent questions and concerns to the Lead Teacher.
- Collaborate with teachers and staff using effective problem-solving, clear communication, flexibility, and encouragement.
- Support and implement the Responsive Classroom management philosophy and practices.
- Coordinate the setup and breakdown of chapel equipment before and after chapel services.
- Prepare instructional materials for music classes, choir classes, and chapel.
- Organize and lead program events related to student learning and music theory acquisition.
Music Instructional Duties - Teach general music to Kindergarten through 5th grade, including instruction in harmony, music appreciation, music history, and ensemble performance.7
- Teach Middle School Choir, focusing on vocal techniques, harmony, and music appreciation.
- Use a diverse repertoire of age- and skill-appropriate music, including traditional, faith-based, and contemporary works.
- Plan, rehearse, and direct students in weekly Chapel and three annual musical performances: PYP Christmas Showcase, PYP Spring Concert, and Middle School Showcase.
- Differentiate music instruction to accommodate individual learning needs and the diverse needs of the student body.
- Develop a well-balanced music program and effectively manage class time to ensure preparation, instruction, and rehearsal objectives are met.
- Establish and maintain high standards of student behavior to ensure a focused and respectful learning environment during instruction, rehearsals, and performances.
- Assess each students musical growth and their contribution to group performance, ensuring all students are included and valued.
- Maintain and care for school-owned musical instruments, equipment, and music materials to prevent damage or loss.
- Collaborate with the Director of Lower and Middle School and other staff to support school-wide musical events such as assemblies, open houses, parent meetings, and seasonal programs.
Minimum Qualifications - While we welcome global applicants, we can currently only accept international applicants already paired with a Visa organization
- Bachelor's degree in education and/or a related field preferred
- Growth mindset about teaching and learning
- Commitment to Daystar's Statement of Faith and to teaching at a Christian school
- Commitment to the faith development of Daystar students
- Knowledge of and/or experience with the International Baccalaureate (IB) Primary Years Program (PYP) would be a plus
