Job Description

A fast-growing electrical contractor based in South Amboy, NJ is seeking an experienced Controller to oversee all financial operations and support the company’s rapid expansion. This is a key leadership role for a strategic, hands-on financial professional with a strong background in construction accounting . Electrical contracting experience is preferred , but prior experience within the construction industry is a must.

The ideal candidate will bring deep knowledge of construction financial management, excellent communication skills, and the ability to build scalable processes to support continued growth.

Requirements

• Oversee all accounting and financial functions, including general ledger, job cost accounting, AP/AR, payroll, and month-end closings.
  

• Manage financial reporting and forecasting, ensuring accuracy and compliance with GAAP and construction industry standards.
  

• Lead budgeting, cash flow management, and financial planning to support operational and strategic initiatives.
  

• Implement and maintain effective internal controls, accounting policies, and procedures.
  

• Oversee project cost tracking, work in progress (WIP) schedules, billings, and change order processes.
  

• Collaborate closely with project management teams to monitor project financial performance and address issues proactively.
  

• Manage external audits, tax filings, bonding requirements, and banking relationships.
  

• Evaluate and optimize accounting software, reporting tools, and workflows to increase efficiency as the company scales.
  

• Build and lead a growing accounting team, fostering a culture of accuracy, accountability, and continuous improvement.
  

• Provide strategic input to ownership and leadership teams regarding financial health, risks, and growth opportunities.
  

QUALIFICATIONS

• Minimum 7–10 years of progressive accounting experience , with at least 3 years in a Controller or senior accounting leadership role.
  

• Construction industry experience is required ; electrical contracting experience strongly preferred .
  

• Strong knowledge of job cost accounting, WIP reporting, contract billings, and construction project financials.
  

• Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field; CPA or CMA designation a plus.
  

• Experience with construction ERP/accounting systems (e.g., Viewpoint, Sage, Foundation, etc.) and advanced Excel skills.
  

• Proven ability to thrive in a fast-growing, entrepreneurial environment.
  

• Excellent communication and leadership skills.
